CALM SUMMERS, FROSTY WINTERS

Fishing in the inland waters has always had an important role in our food economy and the early fishing method using seines contributed to development of commercial fishery. Not all inland waters, however, can provide the preconditions of modern full-time fishery; only in the largest water courses and on the greatest lakes there are sufficient fish resources for a sustainable commercial fishery.

The main catches of the early professional fishermen were caught in winter, when it was possible to use the most efficient gear, the seine. The method was gradually improved and brought from one lake to another and finally to the sea regions. There were also other reasons for concentration of fishing in the winter months. It was easier to move around on ice-covered waters, and more importantly, the good quality of fish kept longer in the cold conditions. In summer time the warm weather shortened the handling and transporting time, which led to smaller amounts and shorter distances. It was only with the lower prices of nets and improved fishing efficiency resulting from the introduction of nylon material that fishing during the open-water season become more profitable.

Many different species are caught in the inland waters, depending on the time of the year and on the special conditions of each lake. Roach, a species hardly noted in the sea regions, has become an important target species, the massive catches of which are mainly due to fishing carried out in order to restore the balance of some over-fertilized waters. In inland waters the developing commercial fishing contributes to the conservation of nature by decreasing the amount of nutrients in the waters. The processing of roach for human consumption is just being started, which lowers the producer price. The catches of several other scaly fish species compare well with th
